Through the secret door from the riverbank,

made of a clearest glass,

that is nearly invisible,

and whose curtains

are smeared with rose oil,

sometimes Guillaume Apollinaire came.

He had his head in gauze, still wounded from the war.

He sat at our table

and read brutally beautiful verses,

which Karel Teige translated immediately.

In the poet's honor

We used to drink absinthe.

It's greener

Than all that is green,

And when we looked up from the table out from the window,

beneath the riverbank, the Seine was flowing.

Oh, yes, The Seine!

Because at a distance, widely straddled

The Eiffel tower stood.

One day Nezval ran in wearing a black bowler.

We had no idea at the time,

not even he knew,

that Apollinaire wore such a hat,

when he fell in love

with the beautiful Louisa De Coligny-Châtillou,

whom he used to call Lou.

Kavárna Slávie /Jaroslav Seifert

Tajnými dveřmi z nábřeží,

které byly z tak průzračného skla,

že jsou téměř neviditelné,

a jejichž závěsy

jsou namazány olejem z růží,

přicházel někdy Guillaume Apollinaire.

Měl ještě z války zafačovanou hlavu.

Přisedl k nám

a četl brutálně krásné verše,

které Karel Teige ihned překládal.

Na básníkovu počest

pívali jsme absint.

Je zelenější

než všechno zelené,

a když jsme od stolku vyhlédli z oken,

pod nábřežím tekla Seina.

Ach, ano, Seina!

Neboť opodál široce rozkročena

stála Eiffelka.

Jednou přiběhl Nezval v černém tvrďásku.

Tenkrát jsme neměli tušení,

ani on to nevěděl,

že právě takový nosil i Apollinaire,

když se zamiloval

do krásné Louisy de Coligny-Châtillou,

které říkával Lou.
